Zoe Saldaña was born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey. Raised in Queens, New York, and the Dominican Republic, she developed a strong interest in dance and studied ballet and other forms of movement. After returning to New York, she pursued performance work and made an early television appearance on Law & Order in 1999. Her dance background proved especially valuable when she made her feature-film debut as ballet student Eva Rodriguez in Center Stage in 2000.
Saldaña steadily built an impressively varied screen career through films including Drumline, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, The Terminal, and Colombiana. She became internationally recognized through three major science-fiction and superhero roles: Nyota Uhura in the Star Trek films, Neytiri in James Cameron’s Avatar series, and Gamora in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Her performances brought distinctive strength and emotional depth to some of modern cinema’s most popular franchises.
Beyond acting, Saldaña has worked as a producer through Cinestar Pictures, the company she formed with her sisters, and founded the media platform BESE to amplify Latino stories. She received a Hollywood Walk of Fame star in 2018 and was included in the Time 100 in 2023. In 2025, she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for Emilia Pérez, adding a landmark honor to an already remarkable career.
